Thomas considered for a moment, and he thought he might owe Greta some truth, if he was going to continue asking to see her. She had certainly been nothing but forthcoming with him so far.

Besides, Greta spoke in the past tense - even if her answer was vague, she certainly made it clear that she thought of her marriage as over.
