"She wanted me to marry the doctor's sister," he says quietly. "I chose you. When I saw you, before I met with your father. I couldn't tear you from my thoughts. It was Lucille's scheme, but I wanted you."

The first wife he'd ever chosen for himself, and she nearly died because of him.

"I found great comfort in you, Edith. I'd been going along with our scheme for so long, I-- I didn't know how to break out of it. I didn't even consider it, before I met you. You made me want something different. Something real."
