As much as Eric cannot quite ask the question, Thomas isn't sure he could answer it.

"Yes," he says. "I told her everything, before the end. I tried to save her, and the man that came to rescue her. I think, as far as I can tell, anyway, that it's why she still speaks to me."

He sighs, contemplating his tea.

"I haven't told anyone else that, before now. I hope you'll keep it in confidence. I hadn't wanted anyone to know, for Edith's sake more than mine."
